The rubber this case is made of is soft and thick. It's not a cheap hard plastic-like rubber you find with some cases. The rubber on this case is soft, but extremely thick, so it does a good job of absorbing the impacts from bumps and falls. It's a one piece design, so you slide your iPad into one end of it and then pull the other end up around it. It will take a little elbow grease to get the iPad into it, but that's because once you have it in, it stays put. It doesn't side around or wiggle out of the case at all.
