Here are the different modes of play:

- Letter Mode: The first time you press a letter Ernie says the letter and the name of an object that begins with the letter. For example: D like Dinosaur. The second time you press the same letter Ernie says what sound the letter makes. The third time you press that letter Ernie says the object again, but this time there is a cute animation and sound.

- Letter Search Mode: Ernie asks you to find a specific letter. He also flashes that letter on the screen briefly. 1. The LeapsterGS has a much better display. You don't realize it until you compare it side-by-side with a previous generation Leapster. The screen is about 20% larger (3.5" diag), and has much better resolution and color.

The Melissa & Doug coloring pads have nice thick high-quality paper, so they work with markers as well as crayons or pencils. While somewhat gendered (dinosaurs and trucks on the blue pad, princesses & fairies on the pink pad), they at least don't label them by gender explicitly. This computer is great for teaching young children. Easy to handle and the mouse is adorable.

The screen lights up different patterns when you press the buttons or the mouse. If not played with for 30 secs or so, it sings a song and shuts itself down to save batteries. Sometimes it gets itself stuck and keeps replaying "Are you home?" over and over, but just turn it off and on again and it's fine. The sticker above the mouse on the right is where they can select play or music or whatever different modes. Well, that sticker didn't last long. Thankfully it was the only sticker on it though.

If you just want to jot down notes and small diagrams this is a nice product. If you want to save your notes and scribbles this particular item in the product line will not do that. Essentially, what you write and draw persists so long as you do not press the erase button. Once erase is pressed the screen goes back to blank and you can start writing and drawing other stuff. It works like you're drawing and writing on a single piece of paper and when your finished you run it through a shredder.

This is a nice tablet for the kids. They can learn to read and write the alphabets and numbers using this one. It has a couple of games and stories and you can download others from the internet. It works on 4 AAA batteries. One drawback is that it consumes a lot of battery power but you can increase it by keeping a low speaker volume.
